Charles Chaplin was born the 16th of April
in 1889 in the East Lane, Walworth. His
parents, Hannah Hili and Charles Chaplin,
were singers and actors of varieties Jews.
He had a brother called Sydney.
In that moment, things didn’t work
very well for the family; their father,
Charles, had abandoned them because he had
problems with alcohol. Hannah had to care
for Sydney and Charlie by herself and started
to lose her voice. In 1894 while she was
singing, her voice broke. The entrepreneur
sent to the scene, little Charles with only
five years old, who imitated Hannah’s
voice including the final demise, for the
fun of the public. That was his artistic
debut.
Charles Chaplin was a great director and
actor, in 1914 he rode more than 30 films,
and one of them was “Laughing Gas”.
In that film, Charles is a dentist and one
of his patients receive a big amount laughing
gas.
From 1915 to 1966 he made more than 100
films. The most popular was “The Gold
Rush” in 1925. Maybe the most popular
story about this film was that Chaplin had
to eat a boot made of liquorice; the scene
was shot so many times that Charles finally
sick.
In 1935 Chaplin made his first movie with
sound “modern times”. The movie
criticizes the desperate conditions of employment
for the working class at the time of the
Great Depression. “Modern Times”
was a film from the silent films and talkies.
Some sound effects were included in the
film, like music, singers and voices coming
from radios and speakers and the sound of
machine activity. At the end of the film
can be briefly heard the voice of Charles
Chaplin, who sings a version of the Daniderff
Léo song, "Je cherche après
Titine" but without meaning, known
as "charabia", which seek to resemble
sounds a mixture of French and Italian,
with some words in English.
Chaplin made his first talkie in 1940 called
"The Great Dictator” this movie
was a harsh criticism of the Nazi empire.
In the story, Chaplin has two papers: a
Jew from a ghetto, and “the dictator”
(the critic of Hitler). The movie shows
to the world in a humorous way what happened
in World War II. I want to tell, from my
personal opinion that you have to see this
movie at least once in life: an excellent
script and uncensored (this is without doubt
one of my favourite movies) Curiosities
about this movie:
-It was censured in Spain until the date
of the die of Franco
- Adolf Hitler asked to put the film, not
once but twice, and people never knew about
his comments on it. In an interview, Chaplin
said he would do anything for himself to
know the views of Hitler
- Chaplin took 559 days to finish the film
- The language that gives the speeches Astolfo
Hynkel (the copy of Hitler) is not German,
but a language improvised by Charles Chaplin.
